Get Ready for the New Electric Volkswagen Microbus!
Volkswagen is reviving one of its most iconic vehicles: the Microbus! This legendary bus represented freedom in the 1960s and '70s, and now it's returning to America's roadways in 2022 as an electric vehicle.
Volkswagen is planning on creating a production version of its award-winning I.D. Buzz concept electric vehicle. This will be the second EV concept vehicle slated for production by VW using the automaker's Modular Electric Drive kit. The Modular Electric Drive kit, or MEB, for short, is a group of components and chassis parts designed to maximize electric drive potential. Additionally, the ID. Buzz concept microbus will deliver 369 horsepower. It will have a 300-mile estimated driving range, along with a fast-charge system that will recharge 80% of the bus's energy capacity in just 30 minutes. The new Microbus will even feature all-wheel drive for a more modern driving experience. This is a large improvement on the first VW Bus from 1950, which only had 30 horsepower.
In addition to its modern engineering features, the new Microbus will be designed to resemble the original Type 2 without directly mimicking it. The new Microbus will feature a front V in the bodywork that pays homage to the two-tone predecessor on the original Bus, as well as a light strip surrounding the vehicle and headlights with hexagonal segments. Inside, there will be plenty of flexible space with plenty of room for all your friends. The I.D. Buzz concept is also expected to feature a slate of autonomous technologies, including a fold-away steering wheel, pop-up laser scanner, heads-up display and possibly even an "I.D. Pilot" mode.
